Building Community in Oregon Since 1994

View in E-mag

Dakota Roofing is a family-run roofing company based in Salem, Oregon.

Founded in 1994 by Richard Klindtworth, the business was incorporated under the name Klindtworth Roofing and in the early years, it focused solely on commercial roofing.

In 2015, the company adopted the name Dakota Roofing and, in 2021, officially moved its headquarters to Salem, following Richard’s retirement in 2020. Today, the core of the business is run by Richard’s son, Jacob, who continues the company’s legacy of exceptional craftsmanship and customer service that the community has come to know and trust.

“As we looked to grow and connect more with the community, we knew we needed a more marketable name,” says Jacob Klindtworth, CEO, Dakota Roofing. “The name ‘Dakota’ stuck because all of our extended family is from North Dakota, and it felt like a natural fit. We later found out that in the Native American Dakota language, ‘Dakota’ also means ‘friend’ or ‘ally’ which matches the values we aim to bring into our client relationships.”

In 2022, Dakota Roofing expanded its services once more to include residential roofing in its portfolio as part of a larger growth strategy. This sector, Klindtworth estimates, makes up roughly 50 per cent of the company’s total revenue stream. Today, Dakota Roofing offers a wide range of roofing services for both residential and commercial properties. These include new roof installations, full replacements and repairs, routine maintenance, and cleaning. Dakota Roofing also provides gutter and downspout installations. The company works with high-quality materials such as asphalt shingles, metal roofing, and single-ply membranes like TPO, and they have experience with both sloped and flat roof systems.

Serving Oregon Since 1994

Dakota Roofing serves a broad area across Oregon’s Willamette Valley and the Central Coast. Their service regions include Salem, Portland, Eugene, Gresham, Beaverton, McMinnville, Newport, Lincoln City, Florence, Albany, and Oregon City, as well as parts of Southwest Washington. To date, the company has completed more than 700 residential and commercial projects that include churches, schools and community centers using shingle, metal or membrane roofing solutions.

“While Oregon is our home base, we also do quite a bit of commercial work in Washington and are actively looking to establish residential services there as well,” Klindtworth says. “We’re open to special projects outside those areas if they make sense for the team and align with our capabilities.”

With more than three decades of experience and certifications from top manufacturers such as GAF’s Master Elite status, a Preferred Owens Corning contractor, along with CertainTeed, Taylor Metal Products, and IKO, Dakota Roofing is known for its reliable service, quality workmanship, and clear communication across all channels. They also offer free estimates and consultations, as well as flexible financing options to help make roofing projects more accessible for their customers.

In 2024, Dakota Roofing celebrated 30 years in business, and a great deal of that continued success stems from the power of relationships the company has formed within the community, Klindtworth says.

“Being family-run means there’s no hiding behind a corporate name. Our reputation is personal. We live in the same communities we serve, so there’s a real sense of responsibility. That shows up in how we treat clients, how we lead our crews, and how we follow through on our word.”

By investing in experienced, professional contractors who take real pride in their work, Dakota Roofing has solidified its reputation as a go-to roofing company in the state. “We train and invest in our team to make sure every job is done right. It’s not just about quality installs,” Klindtworth says. “It’s about clean communication, strong project management, and showing up when we say we will. That consistency is what keeps people coming back.”

Professionals in Project Development

With the residential side of the business growing steadily since 2022, Jacob’s team always has their hands full, with crews averaging roughly 12 re-roofs per week. That’s on top of a consistently steady commercial portfolio of projects which continues year-round and remains a core part of the business.

“We typically have between 40 and 100 active projects at any given time,” Klindtworth says. “That includes everything from standard residential re-roofs to large, multi-structure commercial jobs. We’ve built the internal systems to manage that kind of volume while still giving every customer the attention they deserve.”

One of Dakota Roofing’s most recent projects was the Oregon Coast Community College project in Newport, OR. Completed in the summer of 2024, during this 70,000 square foot reroof project with Todd Construction, Dakota Roofing teams replaced the aging roofing with a robust, long-lasting metal system, while also upgrading underlying elements and ensuring resilience against coastal storms, which are quite common in the area. The project remained on schedule and under budget thanks mainly to better-than-expected sheathing conditions.

“A major challenge was the sheer scale and timeline. Due to the length of certain panels, some sections required on-site roll forming, adding complexity to an already tight production schedule,” Klindtworth says. “As a prevailing wage public works project, it demanded high standards in documentation, compliance, and quality. Our team executed it under a strict timeline with precision craftsmanship, and it remains one of our proudest large-scale achievements to date.”

Over the last several years, Dakota Roofing has received several industry awards including Best Roofing Company honors in multiple markets. The company also carries top-level certifications with leading manufacturers such as GAF, which allows them to offer extended warranties and higher-tier system options for both residential and commercial clients. “These recognitions reflect the standards we hold ourselves to every day,” Klindtworth says.

Looking ahead, Dakota Roofing has its sights set on continued growth in the Pacific Northwest, specifically in its residential division.

“We’re building out the systems and team needed to deliver the same level of quality and service at a larger scale, without losing what makes us who we are,” Klindtworth concluded.
